Tad Williams' Otherland series is set in the late 21st century, where technology has significantly progressed, and people are able to "connect" into the Net and experience a virtual reality. The series start off when a boy falls into a coma while on the Net, and his sister discovers that he can't unplug himself and exit the Net.
